Rental Car Tolls in Miami: SunPass, Toll-By-Plate and What You Will Pay

Tolls are the most common surprise charge on a Miami car rental. The tolls themselves are small. What catches people is the service fee the rental company adds, and the fact that it can show up on your card days or weeks after you get home.

This guide explains how tolls work in a rental car in Miami, what the major companies charge, and how to pay less.

Fees below come from SunPass’s published summary of rental programs and from county toll schedules, checked in October 2026. Rental companies change these often, so read your rental agreement.

Why you cannot just pay cash

You cannot pay cash on Miami-area toll roads. There are no toll booths to stop at. An overhead gantry reads a transponder on the windshield or photographs the license plate.

Roads you are likely to meet:

  • Dolphin Expressway (SR 836). The main route between the airport, downtown and Miami Beach.
  • Airport Expressway (SR 112). From the airport toward I-95 and the Julia Tuttle Causeway.
  • Don Shula (SR 874), Snapper Creek (SR 878) and Gratigny (SR 924) expressways.
  • Florida’s Turnpike, including the route south toward Homestead and the Keys.
  • I-95 Express lanes. The regular lanes are free.
  • Rickenbacker Causeway to Key Biscayne and Venetian Causeway to Miami Beach. Each is $3.25 with SunPass and $6.50 by plate for a two-axle car.

The MacArthur and Julia Tuttle causeways to Miami Beach are free.

How tolls work in a rental car

In your own car, a toll without a transponder becomes a Toll-By-Plate invoice mailed to you. In a rental, the car is registered to the rental company, so the invoice goes there instead.

Here is what happens:

  1. A camera photographs the plate as you pass under the gantry.
  2. The toll is billed to the rental company’s toll program vendor.
  3. The vendor charges the credit card on your rental agreement for the toll plus a service fee.
  4. The vendor keeps the service fee. The toll agency gets only the toll.

Two consequences follow. You usually pay the higher undiscounted toll rate, not the SunPass rate. And the fee structure is whatever your rental company set.

What the major rental companies charge

These are the programs as summarized on SunPass’s rental vehicle page.

CompaniesUnlimited planIf you do not buy the plan
Enterprise, National, AlamoNone needed$4.95 for each day you use a toll, capped at about $30 per rental, plus the tolls
Avis, Budget$12.99 per day or $64.95 per week$6.95 for each day you use a toll, capped at $34.75 per rental month, plus the tolls
Payless$12.99 per day or $64.95 per week$7.95 for each day you use a toll, capped at $37.95 per rental month, plus the tolls
Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty$14.99 per day$9.99 for each day you use a toll, plus the tolls
Fox$14.49 per day, up to $217.35$15 for each toll, capped at $90 per rental, plus the tolls

With Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Avis, Budget, Payless and Fox, tolls without a plan are billed at the toll agency’s highest undiscounted rate.

Two words matter more than any others in these programs:

  • “Per day.” An unlimited plan is charged for every day of the rental, including days the car never leaves the hotel garage.
  • “Per usage day.” The pay-as-you-go fee is charged only on days you pass through a toll.

Sixt and other companies not listed here set fees by location. Independent and local agencies vary the most. Some include a transponder for a low flat daily rate, and others bill each toll with a fee afterward. Ask before you sign.

What it looks like on a real trip

Take a five-day rental with tolls on two days, totaling $6.

ProgramWhat you pay
Enterprise, National or Alamo$6 in tolls + 2 × $4.95 = about $16
Avis or Budget, no plan$6 in tolls + 2 × $6.95 = about $20
Hertz, Dollar or Thrifty, no plan$6 in tolls + 2 × $9.99 = about $26
Hertz unlimited plan5 × $14.99 = about $75

Now flip it. On a five-day trip with long Turnpike drives every day, an unlimited plan can come out ahead. The right choice depends on how much toll driving you will actually do.

Three ways to pay less

1. Use your own transponder

If you already have a SunPass or a prepaid Toll-By-Plate account, you can charge the rental’s tolls to it:

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. Add the rental car’s license plate.
  3. Set the start and end dates of the rental.
  4. Take your transponder with you when you return the car.

E-ZPass and several other out-of-state transponders are also accepted on Florida toll roads. SunPass lists the accepted brands on the same page.

Before you drive off, ask the counter how to make sure the car’s own toll device does not also bill you. Many rental cars have a transponder mounted in a box on the windshield that needs to stay closed.

2. Buy a SunPass when you arrive

Staying a week or more, or visiting Florida often? A SunPass can pay for itself in one trip.

  • SunPass PRO: $14.95. Portable, and it also works wherever E-ZPass is accepted.
  • SunPass Mini: $4.99. A sticker made to stay on one windshield, so it is a poor fit for rentals.

Both are sold at Publix, CVS and Walgreens, among thousands of Florida retailers. You activate the transponder and load a prepaid balance online, then add the rental plate as described above.

3. Skip the toll roads

Most trips in Miami have a free alternative. Turn on “avoid tolls” in your navigation app before leaving the rental lot. It usually adds time, sometimes a lot at rush hour, but for a short visit with a couple of local trips it can make the whole question go away.

Questions to ask at the counter

These five questions prevent most toll disputes later:

  1. Is the toll fee charged per rental day or only on days I use a toll?
  2. Is there a maximum fee for the rental?
  3. Are tolls billed at the SunPass rate or the higher plate rate?
  4. Can I use my own transponder, and how do I disable the one in the car?
  5. When will toll charges appear on my card?

Keep your rental agreement and note the times you used toll roads. Toll charges often post after the rental has closed, sometimes weeks later, and the agreement is what you will need if a charge looks wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a SunPass to drive a rental car in Miami?

No. Every major rental company has a program that lets you use toll roads without one. A SunPass only saves you the company’s service fees.

Can I pay Miami tolls with cash?

No. The toll roads in and around Miami are all electronic.

What happens if I decline the toll plan and drive through a toll anyway?

You are charged the toll plus the company’s pay-as-you-go fee. With the major brands that is between about $5 and $10 for each day you use a toll, and with some companies it is charged per toll.

How much is the Toll-By-Plate fee in Florida?

Toll-By-Plate invoices carry a $2.50 administrative charge per monthly invoice, on top of higher toll rates. In a rental, the rental company’s fee applies instead.

Is it cheaper to avoid toll roads from Miami airport?

For one or two trips, usually yes. From the MIA Rental Car Center, both nearby expressways are tolled, so set your navigation to avoid tolls before you pull out.

The bottom line

For a short Miami trip, skip the unlimited plan unless you will be on toll roads every day. Know your company’s per-usage-day fee, bring your own transponder if you have one, and use the “avoid tolls” setting for local driving. Of course, let’s delve deeper into the symbiotic relationship between Miami and luxury cars, especially during the celebratory aura of Labor Day.

A Dive into Miami’s History with Cars

Miami’s love affair with cars isn’t something new. In the roaring ’20s, Miami was a popular destination for America’s elite. Tycoons and movie stars would flock to the city, often showcasing their luxurious cars on the Art Deco streets. This historical linkage set a precedent, associating Miami with opulence, style, and of course, luxury cars.

The Culture of Display

Miami is home to several luxury events, from boat shows to art galas. One of the unspoken norms in these events? The car you arrive in. It’s not uncommon to find a line-up of supercars outside exclusive events, with each vehicle reflecting its owner’s personality. During Labor Day, these events amplify in number, making luxury cars an essential aspect of the Miami experience.

Labor Day in Miami isn’t just a holiday; it’s an experience. Amidst the backdrop of sun, sea, and skyscrapers, luxury cars enhance this experience, making it memorable. They perfectly complement the city’s vibrant culture, history, and spirit. So, the next time you’re in Miami for Labor Day, remember that a luxury car doesn’t just add to the trip; it defines it.

A Luxury Seeker’s Guide to Car Rental in Miami: What You Should Know

Luxury car with Miami background

Miami is one of the easiest places in the country to rent a car you would never buy: a convertible for Ocean Drive, a full-size luxury SUV for a group, or an exotic for one memorable weekend. It is also a place where the terms matter more than the daily rate.

This guide explains how luxury and exotic rentals differ from a standard rental, what to ask and how to avoid the expensive mistakes. Company details come from the rental companies’ own websites, checked in October 2026.

Luxury, exotic or specialty: know what you are booking

  • Luxury. Premium sedans and SUVs such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Range Rover and the Cadillac Escalade. Comfortable, and practical for a whole trip.
  • Exotic. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce. Usually rented by the day, with tighter terms.
  • Specialty. Convertibles, Corvettes, Mustangs and Jeep Wranglers. The fun of an open car at a much lower price.

Ask for the exact model and year, and whether the reservation guarantees that car or only “a similar one.”

What you will need

Requirements for high-end cars are stricter than for an economy rental, and they vary by company. Ask about each of these before you pay anything.

  • Age. Many companies set a higher minimum for exotic cars, often 25. Some local agencies list rates for drivers 21 to 24, with a surcharge.
  • Deposit. Expect a larger hold on your credit card than on a standard rental, sometimes several thousand dollars for an exotic. Ask the amount and when it is released.
  • Insurance. Companies commonly want proof of your own full-coverage auto policy that extends to a rental. Credit card coverage often excludes expensive and exotic cars, so read the terms or call the issuer.
  • License and card. A valid license and a major credit card in the same name. International renters should bring a passport.

The terms that cost money

Mileage

Unlimited mileage is rare on high-end cars. A daily allowance is normal, with a charge for each mile beyond it. As one example, Miami Rent A Car says luxury and specialty cars booked on its website include 150 free miles a day. A day trip to Key West and back is more than 300 miles, so do the math first.

Damage

Low front ends, wide wheels and soft tops are easy to damage and expensive to fix.

  • Record a slow video of the whole car at pickup, including wheels, the front lip, the interior and the roof.
  • Take steep driveways, speed bumps and parking ramps slowly and at an angle.
  • Do not drive through standing water. Summer storms and seasonal high tides flood low streets, and water damage may not be covered.

Tolls and fuel

Miami’s toll roads are cashless, so ask how tolls are billed. Our guide to rental car tolls in Miami explains the fee types. Most of these cars require premium fuel, and you will be expected to return the tank at the level you received it.

Who drives

Only drivers named on the agreement are covered. Add a second driver properly, even if there is a fee.

Delivery and pickup

Many Miami luxury agencies bring the car to you. For example:

  • Miami Luxury Auto Rent says it picks clients up from Miami International Airport or from hotels in Miami and Miami Beach.
  • Ventura Rent-A-Car says it delivers to hotels in Miami, Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

Confirm the delivery fee, the time window and where the handover inspection will happen. Our list of independent car rental agencies in Miami has addresses and phone numbers.

Choosing the right car for the plan

  • Cruising South Beach. A convertible is ideal, and traffic on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue is slow enough to enjoy it.
  • A group or a family. A luxury SUV such as the Cadillac Escalade ESV seats everyone with luggage.
  • A special night. An exotic for 24 hours costs far less than a week and covers the occasion.
  • Arriving in style. A chauffeured car may suit you better than driving. See Miami airport luxury transportation.

For ideas, Miami Luxury Auto Rent’s blog lists the most luxurious cars to rent in Miami, and we cover the category in Miami exotic car rentals and luxury cars rental in Miami.

Parking and driving it

  • Parking. In Miami Beach, use hotel valet or a city garage instead of the street. The Miami Beach parking guide lists garages and rates. Ask the valet about the fee before you hand over the key.
  • Speed. Florida made extreme speeding a criminal offense in 2025. Driving 50 mph or more over the limit can mean jail time.
  • Attention. Expensive cars draw it. Do not leave anything visible inside, and park in attended or well-lit places.

How to avoid a bad rental

  1. Rent from a company with a physical office, a phone that is answered and a written rental agreement.
  2. Get the total price in writing: rate, taxes, fees, delivery, deposit and mileage terms.
  3. Pay with a credit card. Be cautious of anyone who asks for cash, a wire or a payment app.
  4. Read recent reviews, and look for how the company handles deposits and damage claims.
  5. Do the inspection with the agent present, at both pickup and return.

Frequently asked questions

How old do you have to be to rent a luxury car in Miami?

It depends on the company and the car. Many set 25 as the minimum for exotic cars, and some rent luxury and specialty cars to drivers 21 to 24 with a surcharge.

How much is the deposit on an exotic car rental?

It varies widely by company and model, and it is usually much higher than on a standard rental. Ask for the exact hold and the release time before you book.

Does my insurance cover an exotic rental?

Maybe not. Personal policies and credit cards often exclude high-value cars. Call your insurer, and ask the rental company what proof it needs.

Is mileage unlimited on luxury rentals?

Usually not. Expect a daily allowance and a per-mile charge beyond it.

Can a luxury rental be delivered to my hotel?

Often, yes. Several Miami agencies deliver to hotels and to the airport. Confirm the fee and the timing.

The bottom line

Choose the car for the plan, not the photo. Ask about age, deposit, insurance and mileage before you pay, record the car carefully at pickup, and keep it out of standing water and off the street overnight.

Company details were checked against each company’s website in October 2026. Requirements and prices change, so confirm directly before you book.

Independent Car Rental Agencies in Miami: Local Alternatives to the Big Brands

Most visitors rent from one of the national brands inside the airport’s Rental Car Center. Miami also has a group of long-running independent agencies, most of them clustered just outside Miami International Airport, and they are worth a look before you book.

This guide lists local agencies we could verify, explains how pickup works when a company is not in the Rental Car Center, and gives you the questions to ask. Addresses, phone numbers and services come from each company’s own website, checked in October 2026.

Why rent from an independent agency

  • Different cars. Local agencies are where you find Jeep Wranglers, convertibles, 15-passenger vans, late-model Toyotas, and luxury and exotic cars.
  • Pickup that comes to you. Several offer free pickup from the airport, a hotel or a repair shop.
  • Flexibility on age. Some list rates for drivers aged 21 to 24. Expect a surcharge.
  • A person who answers the phone. You are usually dealing with the office that owns the car.

The trade-offs are real too. Hours can be shorter than the national counters, mileage may be capped on specialty cars, and policies on tolls, deposits and insurance differ from one agency to the next. Ask before you sign.

How airport pickup works

Independent agencies are not inside the MIA Rental Car Center. Each one handles arrivals its own way: a shuttle, a driver who meets you, or delivery of the car.

Confirm three things when you book:

  1. Where exactly you will be picked up, and whether you should take the MIA Mover or stay at the terminal.
  2. The number to call when you land.
  3. The office hours, in case your flight is late.

  3. Is mileage unlimited? If not, what is the daily allowance and the charge per extra mile?
  4. How are tolls billed? Policies vary most among local agencies. Our guide to rental car tolls in Miami explains the fee types.
  5. What deposit or card hold do you take, and do you accept debit cards?
  6. What insurance do you require, and what proof do you need?
  7. What is your policy for drivers under 25?

Get the answers in writing, in the reservation confirmation or by email.

Frequently asked questions

Are independent car rental agencies in Miami cheaper?

Sometimes. Agencies outside the airport do not have the same facility costs as the companies in the Rental Car Center, and some pass that on. The only reliable test is the total price for your dates. Our tips for saving money on a Miami car rental show what to compare.

Do independent agencies pick up at Miami airport?

Many do. Champion, Miami Rent A Car, Ventura and Miami Luxury Auto Rent all describe airport pickup or delivery on their websites. Arrange it when you book.

Can I rent from a local agency if I am under 25?

Often, yes. Several local booking forms list a 21 to 24 age option. Expect a daily surcharge and limits on the most expensive cars.

Are the national brands a better choice?

They are simpler for late-night arrivals, one-way rentals and loyalty points. The MIA Rental Car Center guide lists who is on site.

The bottom line

Independent agencies give you choices the big counters do not, especially for specialty cars and personal pickup. Compare the total price, confirm how you will get the car, and get the mileage, toll and deposit terms in writing.

Business details were checked against each company’s website in October 2026. They change, so confirm directly before you book.

Luxury Cars Rentals

Renting a Luxury Car in Miami

sport car seating in Miami Beach

Renting a luxury car in Miami can be a thrilling and luxurious experience, whether you’re visiting the city for a vacation or you’re a local looking to upgrade your ride for a special occasion. With so many options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here’s everything you need to know about renting a luxury car in Miami:

Decide on your budget and preferences

Luxury car rentals can range from a few hundred dollars per day to several thousand, depending on the make and model of the car, the length of the rental period, and any additional features or services you may want. Consider what you’re willing to spend and what you’re looking for in a luxury car. Do you want a sporty convertible, a spacious SUV, or a sleek sedan? Do you want a car with advanced technology, eco-friendly, and features like a heads-up display or a 360-degree camera?

Research and Compare Rental Companies

There are several luxury car rental companies in Miami, each with its own fleet of vehicles and policies. Take the time to research and compare prices and reviews of different companies. Keep in mind that the cheapest option may not always be the best choice – make sure you’re getting a reputable company with a good track record of customer service.

Know the Rental Requirements

Most luxury car rental companies will require a valid driver’s license and a credit card to hold as collateral. Some may also require a minimum age, typically 25, and may charge additional fees for drivers under 25. Be prepared to provide proof of insurance, as well.

Consider the Additional Fees

In addition to the daily rental rate, there may be additional fees for things like taxes, insurance, and additional drivers. Be sure to ask about all fees upfront so you know exactly what you’ll be paying.

Choose Your Car Carefully

Once you’ve found a rental company and settled on a budget, it’s time to choose your car. Take the time to research the different models and features available to find the one that best fits your needs and preferences. If you’re not sure which car to choose, the rental company may have staff on hand to help you make a decision.

Consider Adding Insurance

While your personal car insurance policy may cover rental cars, it’s always a good idea to check with your insurance provider to be sure. If your policy doesn’t cover rentals, or if you don’t have a personal car insurance policy, consider purchasing insurance through the rental company. This can provide added peace of mind and protection in case of an accident or damage to the car.

Make a Reservation

Once you’ve chosen your car and confirmed all the details, it’s time to make a reservation. Most luxury car rental companies allow you to make a reservation online or over the phone. Be sure to have your driver’s license, credit card, and any other required documents ready when you make the reservation.

Pick Up and Return the Car

When you arrive to pick up your luxury car, be prepared to present your driver’s license, credit card, and any other required documents. The rental company will also likely do a walk-around inspection of the car to document its condition before you take possession. Be sure to carefully review the rental agreement before you sign it, and ask any questions you may have. When it’s time to return the car, be sure to return it in the same condition it was when you received it to avoid any additional charges.

Renting a luxury car in Miami can be a fun and exciting experience, but it’s important to do your research and be prepared. By following these tips, you can ensure that you have a smooth and enjoyable rental experience.

Car Rental at Opa-locka Executive Airport (OPF): Options and How to Save

Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport (OPF) has no rental car center and no row of rental counters. Cars are arranged through your FBO or delivered by a local agency, so a little planning before you land saves both time and money.

This guide explains how renting a car at Opa-locka works, what your options are, and how to keep the cost down. Airport details come from the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, checked in October 2026.

Opa-locka Executive Airport at a glance

  • Address: 14201 NW 42nd Avenue, Opa-locka, FL 33054
  • What it is: The largest of Miami-Dade County’s general aviation airports. It serves business, private and charter flights and acts as a reliever for Miami International.
  • FBOs: Atlantic Aviation, Fontainebleau Aviation and Signature Flight Support
  • U.S. Customs: On site, 9 a.m. to midnight daily, with advance notice required
  • Open: 24 hours a day

The airport is about 7 miles north of Miami International Airport. The county puts drive times at roughly 20 minutes to MIA, 30 minutes to Miami Beach and 35 minutes to downtown Miami, before traffic. More is on the county’s Opa-locka airport page.

How car rental works at OPF

Because there is no central rental facility, the car comes to you. There are three common ways to set it up.

1. Ask your FBO

FBOs commonly arrange rental cars for arriving passengers and crew, so ask yours when you set up handling. It is the simplest route. It is not always the cheapest, so ask which company supplies the car and what the total will be.

2. Book a local agency that serves the FBOs

Local companies deliver cars to the FBO of your choice. One example is OPA-LOCKA Airport Rent a Car, which says it leaves the keys and rental contract at the counter at Atlantic Aviation, Fontainebleau Aviation or Signature, so you can sign and drive. According to its website it also offers:

  • A Toyota fleet that is replaced every six months
  • One-way rentals to Miami International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International airports
  • Free 24-hour roadside assistance
  • A price match against advertised Opa-locka rental rates

3. Take a ride to a rental office

If you want a specific brand or car class, a rideshare or taxi to the MIA Rental Car Center takes about 20 minutes and gives you every major company in one building. Several independent agencies in Miami also pick customers up.

Six ways to save on an Opa-locka rental

  1. Reserve before you take off. Give the agency your FBO, tail number and estimated arrival time. Last-minute requests at a general aviation airport can cost more and limit your choice.
  2. Compare the total, not the daily rate. Florida adds a $2 per day rental surcharge and sales tax to every rental. Ask for the all-in figure.
  3. Check your own coverage. Your auto policy or credit card may already cover a rental. Know the answer before anyone offers you a damage waiver.
  4. Decide about tolls early. The Gratigny Expressway (SR 924) beside the airport and Florida’s Turnpike are both cashless. See our guide to rental car tolls in Miami.
  5. Use a one-way rental if you fly out of another airport. Dropping the car at MIA or Fort Lauderdale can beat paying for a ride back to Opa-locka. Ask about the drop fee first.
  6. Refuel yourself. Fill the tank before you return the car so you are not billed the agency’s refueling rate.

Returning the car

Ask where the car should be left and who takes the keys, especially if you depart outside office hours. Photograph the car, the fuel gauge and the odometer when you drop it, and ask for a closed receipt by email.

Frequently asked questions

There is no shared rental car center. Rentals are arranged through the FBOs or delivered to them by local agencies.

How far is Opa-locka airport from Miami?

About 7 miles north of Miami International Airport. Plan on roughly 35 minutes to downtown Miami and 30 minutes to Miami Beach, more at rush hour.

Can I pick up at Opa-locka and return at Miami International?

Some agencies offer one-way rentals between Opa-locka, MIA and Fort Lauderdale. Confirm the fee when you book.

MIA Rental Car Center: How to Pick Up and Return a Car at Miami Airport

Most cars rented at Miami International Airport are picked up in one building: the MIA Rental Car Center. It is not in the terminal, but getting there is free and takes only a few minutes.

This guide walks through pickup and return, lists the companies on site, and flags the things that trip up first-time visitors. Details were checked against the airport’s website in October 2026.

Where it is

MIA Rental Car Center 3900 NW 25th Street, Miami, FL 33142

The center sits just east of the terminals and is part of the Miami Intermodal Center, the airport’s ground transportation hub. The same complex holds the airport’s Metrorail and Tri-Rail stations, so it is also where you catch a train or bus.

How to get there from your flight

  1. Collect your bags at baggage claim.
  2. Go up to the third level of the terminal.
  3. Follow the signs along the moving walkways to the MIA Mover station, between the Dolphin and Flamingo parking garages.
  4. Ride the MIA Mover to the Rental Car Center. It is free and drops you at the customer service lobby.

Signs for “MIA Mover” and “Rental Car Center” start at baggage claim. If you have a lot of luggage, grab a cart before you head up.

Rental companies at the center

The airport lists these companies inside the Rental Car Center:

  • ACE Rent A Car
  • Alamo
  • Avis
  • Budget
  • Carnival Rent A Car
  • Dollar
  • Enterprise
  • Hertz
  • National
  • Payless
  • Royal
  • Sixt
  • Thrifty

Off-site companies

A number of other agencies operate near the airport rather than inside the center, including Fox, Easirent, Green Motion, NU Car Rentals and U-Save. On request, they pick customers up right outside the Rental Car Center lobby. If you booked one of these, call when you arrive at the lobby and confirm exactly where to wait.

The roster and phone numbers are on the airport’s rental car page. That list was last updated in December 2022, so confirm the pickup location shown in your own reservation.

Hours, and the late-flight problem

The Rental Car Center building is open 24 hours a day. The counters inside are another matter. The airport notes that some companies close between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.

If your flight lands late:

  • Check your company’s counter hours before you book, not after.
  • Put your flight number in the reservation so the counter knows about delays.
  • If you are delayed past closing, call the local number, not the national reservation line.

At the counter

A few things speed up pickup and prevent problems later:

  • Bring the right card. The renter’s name must match the driver’s license and the credit card. Debit card policies vary by company, and some require extra documents or a larger hold.
  • Ask about tolls. The expressways next to the airport are cashless, and every company handles tolls differently. Read our guide to rental car tolls in Miami before you get to the counter.
  • Check the insurance you already have. Your own auto policy or credit card may cover a rental. Know the answer before you are asked.
  • Photograph the car. Walk around it before leaving the garage and take pictures of every panel, the wheels, the windshield and the fuel gauge.

Driving out

Two toll roads sit right outside the center: the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) toward downtown and Miami Beach, and the Airport Expressway (SR 112) toward I-95. Neither accepts cash.

If you want to avoid tolls, set your navigation app to “avoid tolls” before you leave the garage. If you are new to driving here, Driving in Miami: 7 Fast Facts You Need to Know is worth five minutes.

Returning your car

  1. Navigate to 3900 NW 25th Street and follow the “Rental Car Return” signs. The airport publishes driving directions to the center.
  2. Follow the signs for your company to its return lane.
  3. Wait for an agent to check the car in, and get a receipt, on paper or by email, before you walk away.
  4. Take the MIA Mover back to the terminal.

Allow extra time. Between refueling, the return, the MIA Mover and the walk to your check-in counter, leave at least 30 minutes on top of the time you would normally arrive for your flight, and more at peak hours.

Refuel before you get close. Gas stations nearest the airport tend to charge the most, so fill up a few miles out.

Not renting? Other ways out of the airport

The Miami Intermodal Center next to the Rental Car Center is also the airport’s transit hub, reached by the same free MIA Mover:

  • Metrorail Orange Line to downtown and Brickell for $2.25.
  • Miami Beach Airport Express (Route 150) to Miami Beach every 30 minutes for $2.25.
  • Tri-Rail to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
  • The free City of Miami trolley, on the Flagami route.

Our guide to public transportation in Miami covers these in detail. Taxis and rideshares pick up at the terminal.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MIA Rental Car Center inside the airport?

It is on airport property but in a separate building. The free MIA Mover connects it to the terminal.

Is the MIA Mover free?

Yes. There is no charge to ride between the terminal and the Rental Car Center.

Is the Miami airport Rental Car Center open 24 hours?

The building is, but individual rental counters are not all open overnight. Some close between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., so confirm with your company.

Where do I return a rental car at Miami airport?

At the Rental Car Center, 3900 NW 25th Street. Follow the “Rental Car Return” signs to your company’s lane, then ride the MIA Mover to the terminal.

Can I return my rental car and go straight to the cruise port?

Yes. Return the car at the Rental Car Center, then take a rideshare or taxi to PortMiami. See our guide to getting to PortMiami from the airports.

The bottom line

Picking up at the MIA Rental Car Center is simple once you know the route: third level, MIA Mover, lobby. The parts that cost people money are the ones outside the building, such as tolls, late counter hours and fuel, so sort those out before you land.
