Why Winter is a Great Time to Buy or Sell a Home in Miami

It’s always a good time to buy a home in Miami! Ok, you deserve a closer look at the subject matter. Yes, Miami is fabulous, and it is understandable why someone would want to own property there. Living here has a fair number of perks, and selling has one nice financial benefit! What is less common knowledge and may seem, at first glance somewhat counterintuitive, is why someone would opt to sell or buy during the winter months. See, just like Miami is an energetic and lively place to be in all year round, so too the real estate market is always alive and active all year round. It might not be the commonly accepted prime time, but the ‘off season’ enjoys certain advantages those sunbathed summer days don’t. Let’s delve into it and see why winter is a great time to buy or sell a home in Miami.

Less is More

Winter is the prime time for bargain hunters who already know a thing or two about finding great real estate deals. Not convinced? Let’s start from the buyer’s perspective. First of all, there are fewer houses on offer. Off to a cracking start, aren’t we? Yes, granted, this may be an initial disadvantage, but for the savvier out there, this is a hidden opportunity. There are fewer offers as people expect the housing market to cool off for the winter. This includes buyers too. You know, the competition. Less competition means fewer bidding wars. Now, look at it from the seller’s perspective. The chances are, some of them really need to sell their houses, especially if they are trying to make the sale at this time of year. This gives you, the buyer, more leverage and an increased probability of getting a reasonable price.  Ok, time to change roles. The above argument seems to make a fair case for buyers but portrays the sellers badly. Again, a matter of perspective. Less competition works in your favor as a seller too. It’s not easy to stand out in a crowd. A red rose is just a flower in a flower field. Plunk it down in the middle of a tundra, and it will start turning heads. Clumsy analogies to one side, the math has you covered too. Statistical analysis suggests that both the chances of selling and getting a reasonable price actually rise, as the temperatures fall.

More Motivation, More Money

This one is a natural extension of the previous point. During the summer and spring, there is a lot of activity. There are plenty of serious buyers, but there are also many of those who are window shopping. There seems to be no direct correlation between seasonal factors and when homes are purchased. An argument could be made that families will sometimes wait for school to be out, but often we don’t have the luxury to choose the timing.

On the other hand, sellers are often guilty of the same thing. With so much happening and so many options available during the warmer months, they may hold out for a higher price. One that might not come. Let’s take the next logical step together. The season passes, they still haven’t sold, and their house is now part of the winter inventory. Who has more negotiating power in that scenario, the buyer or the seller?

Only 24 Hours in a Day

Ever mumbled quietly to yourself, or shouted it out loud in the middle of a crowded household, how there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done? The same is true for even the pros. See, no matter how good you are at your job, delays are inevitable if the demand is too high. A realtor with one client is going to give them their undivided attention. On the other hand, one with more clients than they know what to do with, despite their best efforts, will never be able to provide that level of service. The winter offers advantages that are not so obvious. Less activity means quicker response times, which ultimately means the whole buying-selling process is done more efficiently.

Why is Winter a Great Time to Buy or Sell a Home in Miami? For the Unexpected Savings!

It’s all closely linked. Just like we talked about above, the less activity there is, the less demand there is. What’s one unavoidable part of the process? The inevitable move is waiting right around the corner, whether you sell or buy. When that happens, you’ll be checking out professional movers, such as City Movers, to help with the logistics. You can expect a faster response time, better availability, and even the possibility of a discount.

Whilst on the Topic…

There is more to be said about relocating. What happens often is that people forget about the next step. Selling and buying properties are time-consuming activities. They are severe financial endeavors that soak up all of our focus. Still, what is to follow also demands some serious concentration and should not be neglected. I need to move from one place to another; have you ever seen a more innocuous-looking sentence? Scratch a little below the surface, and you see a logistical spider’s web of potential problems, scheduling, and forethought just waiting to give you a headache. Of course, hiring pros to deal with this type of project is always the way to go, but you need to plan your relocation in time.

Most Affordable Neighborhoods in Miami

Who wouldn’t want to live in paradise? From an economic standpoint, that’s a bit of a problem. Supply is almost always limited, and when demand is high, we know what happens to prices. Still, even paradise is split into different zip codes, and you too can find your slice for a surprisingly reasonable fee. The glamorous beaches, rich culture, Cuban influence, and delightful weather all year long – all these things make life here a dream for many. There is plenty to do and rarely a dull moment. People tend to assume that you can only partake in this dream if you can afford a home whose price tag resembles a social security number. For some areas, this is the case. Still, we are here for a reason. For me, that reason is to present to you the most affordable neighborhoods in Miami. For you, it’s to enjoy the read and see that the dream may yet be alive!

Brownsville

To start us off, we have a neighborhood that offers very reasonable prices. Furthermore, by Miami’s standards, it has a very good logistical situation, with the average commute being under half an hour. This area is populated mainly by younger people, and many of them are single. Therefore, it makes it a desirable prospect for millennials and those looking to meet someone. There are, of course, lots of neighborhoods for singles in Miami, but be careful; some are on the pricier side! Carrying on, Brownsville is a culturally diverse area, and if you thought affordable accommodation means giving up on a good location, in this case, you‘re mistaken. It is close to both the airport and Downtown Miami. The cherry on the cake? It has the most affordable 1-bedroom rent in the area. It is a neighborhood definitely worth checking out.

Model Liberty?

Liberty City or Model City, you can call it what you like, but it won’t change the fact that this neighborhood isn’t too harsh on the old savings account. It represents the kind of wave you want to catch early. It is undergoing an economic revival, with more and more people deciding to make themselves at home there, but the prices haven’t caught on yet. Nestled between the Brownsville mentioned above and Little Haiti, it boasts a rich history, most notably having close ties with Martin Luther King Jr.

A city made of Legos

Gladeview

The name itself sounds relaxing. The house prices will also place your wallet’s mind at ease. This area is also experiencing a wave of sorts. Prices are still below the national average but are on the rise. So, not only would it represent a chance for you to live in Miami, you can always explain to nosy relatives that this is more of a business venture. A great investment opportunity you’d be crazy to miss. The fact it’s in Miami is a sheer fluke. You won’t be shocked to find out, given its name, that it sports several parks and that it too is close to Brownsville. See, that’s why I had to start with Brownsville; it will be our reference point! It somewhat makes sense that many affordable neighborhoods would be clustered around a few specific areas.

Most Affordable Neighborhoods in Miami? Let Me Introduce You to Little Havana

We discussed owning your own slice of heaven, your own piece of paradise, in the opening paragraph. That’s Little Havana’s queue to walk in and offer a warm smile. I’ll give you three guesses of what the neighborhood’s main influences are, and, yes, it means exactly what you think it means. Mouth-watering Cuban cuisine, festivals, music, Salsa music, crowds of happy folk, and did I mention music? What are you waiting for? Get your things packed and check out Best Long Distance Movers to secure some help with the move to your new neighborhood! One more thing, as it seems no entry can be adequately closed without me mentioning Brownsville, here we go; Brownsville.

Kendall

This is a twofer. See, what you get with Kendall is both affordable housing options and a very safe neighborhood! No, the area is not known for its wild parties, but if you are looking to raise a family, you can already see how Kendall is racking up the points. It offers good schooling options and outdoor activities to boot. As if you needed further proof of why this is a family-friendly neighborhood! If you are worried that it is a little isolated, don’t be; it has access to Miami’s Metrorail system, so you aren’t cut off from the downtown areas. So, explore how to prepare to move to Miami with kids and get ready for a new adventure!

Children and parents playing in the backyard

Hialeah

Brownsville. Sorry, just felt the urge to type that first. It feels like I haven’t mentioned it in forever. Back to the topic at hand, Hialeah offers good housing options. It also provides a good community. While many of the previously mentioned neighborhoods are relatively small or in the early stages of development, this is not the case with Hialeah’s 200,000+ strong population.

Time to Move?

Looking at the above list of budget-friendly neighborhoods, I hope it is becoming apparent that options are available. I sincerely hope you will be able to find your dream home in your dream price range. If you do, what that will invariably mean, is you will have to relocate. A hassle, I know, but it comes with the territory. Long-distance moves are never easy, no less so if you have decided to organize the whole project yourself. However, hiring professional movers can be a real time-saver, headache-remover, and nerve-preserver! Finding a reliable company to handle the transfer of your belongings can help put your mind at rest when it comes to the big move.

Golden Beaches, Here We Come!

There you have it, folks, the most affordable neighborhoods in Miami, all conveniently located in one article for your reading pleasure! The truth is that finding the best price and home will always take time. Even when you narrow a whole state to a relatively small area, there will be considerable price differences. Be patient, do your homework, and you will be able to find the perfect accommodation. The above should give you a good starting point, but the rest is, ultimately, up to you. What more can I say than Brownsville. Yes, we all knew it was coming; I couldn’t help myself! Happy house hunting and good luck finding your dream home in Magic City.

How to meet people after moving to Miami?

Best friends of many adults are people they’ve met in childhood, college years, or workplace. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as most of us, once we start working, don’t get as many opportunities to go out and socialize.

Even though making new friends might sound daunting, it’s not impossible, especially in Miami. As an adult, it might require more effort, but it’s worth it. Here’s how to prepare yourself to make new friends.

Boost your self-confidence and be authentic

Nothing is more attractive than confidence! Confident people tend to emit positive energy and inspire others to be comfortable in their skin and live their best lives. As everyone wants to be around positive people, it’s an excellent motivation to work on your self-assurance.

The best way to boost your self-confidence is to start loving yourself more and accepting who you are. Don’t compare yourself to others but work on bettering yourself and your life. Only when we’re happy and feel good about ourselves will other people feel comfortable being around us.‍

Don’t be afraid to take the initiative and be persistent

Miami is full of friendly and fascinating people from all spheres of life. If someone draws your attention, don’t be afraid to approach them first and introduce yourself. If you work on your confidence, it will be much easier to strike up conversations with them.

Five people standing in a room at a party and talking

However, always have in mind that not all acquaintances turn into long-term friendships. If you enjoy someone’s company and want to stay friends, make an effort to build your friendship. Invite them for a coffee, sports event, or a party and keep in touch via social media. Of course, don’t be pushy if you notice that the other side is not as interested in being friends.

Mistakes to avoid

When meeting new friends, the last thing you want is to be off-putting to others. Here are the most common mistakes you should avoid when making new friends:

  • Don’t get too personal too soon.
  • Try not to dominate the conversation. Nothing can be unappealing as much as talking too much about yourself.
  • Read their body language.
  • Don’t expect people to get close to you immediately.
  • Avoid being too cocky or complaining too much.

Where to meet people after moving to Miami?

After you organize an easy relocation process and settle in, it’s time to go out, explore the city and make some cool new friends. This city is welcoming and home to so many great and authentic people, so you will probably have no problems with quickly finding friends to hang out with. Very soon after moving to Miami, you’ll realize that it was one of the best decisions you have made in your life.

Join groups

There are plenty of groups in Miami available for you to join. The best thing about groups is that they’re the most likely place to meet people you have common interests with. For instance, you can join a volunteer group, book club, or fitness group, depending on what you like and enjoy doing.

Attend events

Miami is known for hosting fantastic events, and people who attend them tend to be very outgoing. If you are a fan of sports, there are plenty of events organized throughout the year. Attending games is a great way to meet other sports fans.

Concerts are great to meet people after moving to Miami

If you are foody, you must check out one of Miami’s food tours and potentially make new friends with whom you can explore Miami’s food scene further. From concerts to gallery openings, the Golden city has something to offer for everyone. Yours is just to get dressed and call a cab.

Go to parties

When you think of Miami, you probably think of parties. And you are right – you can find a great party to go to almost every day of the week. They give you an excellent opportunity to meet new people, get to know them, and learn about their culture. Therefore, don’t miss out on your neighborhood party or any other celebration you’ve been invited to. It’s a perfect place to build new friendships.

Good luck making new friends!

Why the holidays are a good time to sell your Miami house

Are you planning to sell your home? This might come as a surprise, but the holidays are a good time to sell your Miami house. You probably heard that spring is the best time for real estate transactions, both buying and selling. However, the holiday season has its benefits, too. If you are not convinced, continue reading as we’ll explain the benefits of selling your home during the holiday season as well as give you tips on how to make the most of it.

Why are the holidays a good time to sell your Miami house?

Selling your Miami home during the cold winter months can be a challenge. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea or that you should wait for spring to come. There are many reasons why selling your home during the holiday season is a good idea. Here are just some of them.

Less supply

Traditionally, the most popular seasons for buying a home are spring and summer. During warmer months, more homes are being listed, which gives potential buyers a chance to be picky and take their time with making a decision. Also, due to the bigger inventory of homes on the market, you’ll need to make more efforts and investments to make your Miami house stand out.

On the other hand, during the holiday season, you will be facing less competition. As serious buyers won’t have a lot to choose from, you can make your home easily stand out. You might get to sell it quicker than you would in the spring, too. Fewer homes on the market also mean you might get to raise your asking price and end up selling your home for more money than you expected.

Quality buyers

During spring and summer, there are plenty of open houses being organized. It’s not unusual for people to stop by and take a look, even if they are not currently searching for a home. This can be pretty difficult and stressful for sellers as they can never know how many people are genuinely interested and serious about their potential purchase.

Things are different during the holiday season. People looking for a home during the winter months are very serious about finding their dream home. Think about it – who would waste their time during Christmas or Thanksgiving to look for a home they’re not even interested in buying?

Therefore, even though there might be fewer buyers, the ones who are on the market are looking because they are ready to buy. Focus on quality, not quantity.

Evoke feelings of warmth and coziness

Emotions are a big part of any transaction. People make many purchases based on their intuition and feelings, which you can especially benefit from during the holidays. The holidays are all about family, sitting by the fireplace, and eating cookies. So, by staging your home to give out a comfy and homey vibe, you are more likely to attract a higher number of potential buyers.

Holiday home staging

Here are some of our holiday home staging tips:

  • Declutter – A messy space can make even serious buyers get a wrong impression and back out of a sale. So, one of the first things to do is to get rid of unnecessary things. If you have extra stuff you want to keep but don’t have where to put them away, your best option is to rent a storage unit. This way, you’ll make sure your items will be safe until you decide to move to your new home and take them with you.
  • Create a cozy feel – If you make your home cozy and warm, you will have that much more chance to sell it quicker. For example, if you have a fireplace, light a fire and stage a cozy reading space next to it. Or, when you know potential buyers are coming to check your home out, put some treats in the oven. The smallest details can do a lot when it comes to a home sale.
  • Don’t go overboard with decorations – Holiday decorations will surely help you attract more buyers. However, try not to cross the line and make your home seem tacky. Tend to go for something simple and natural as you’ll have the highest chances to appeal to the broadest range of buyers. Heavy decorations can not only look bad but also draw the buyers’ attention from your home and make them want to look somewhere else.
  • Boost the curb appeal – The first impression can make or break your sale, so it’s really important to pay attention to curb appeal. If buyers don’t see what they like on the outside, they’ll most likely turn around and look somewhere else. For that reason, always make sure your Miami home looks spotless on the outside.

Timing

The new year often brings new job opportunities all around the US. Consequently, more people will need to relocate for a job and look for a new home. These are the best kind of buyers you can wish for. Why? Simple – because they’re in a rush to find a home before their new job starts. Take advantage of this and show them how your Miami house can be a perfect place for them to call home. It’s one of the best times to ensure a quick house sale.

A dachshund in a moving box next to a white wall

Perhaps a job change is the reason you’re selling your Miami house during the holidays. If that is the case, don’t let yourself get preoccupied with your home sale and forget all about your upcoming move. You need to be well prepared and look for ways to get the best deal. If you do it last minute, you probably won’t get a chance to negotiate with your Florida movers and get a good offer.

Holidays ARE a good time to sell your Miami house!

We hope we were able to convince you that the holidays are a good time to sell your Miami house. We wish you happy holidays and the best of luck with selling your home.

Tips for finding your dream home in Miami

Finding a house is like going shopping. With a bit of planning and research, you’ll be able to zero in on the property you desire at the best price. Using these tips, you’ll be well on your way to buying a property. So, let’s get on with the tips for finding your dream home in Miami.

Know what you like

Find a house that fits your personality. What type of houses do you prefer: brand-new construction or an older house? Do you want a single-story or multi-story home? If you’re thinking of buying a fixer-upper, ask yourself if you’re handy or if you’ll need to set aside money for contractors.

Do some research

Make a wish list of the things you need and desire in a house, and then separate them into categories of essentials vs. frills. Decide on three or four areas where you want to reside based on factors such as commute time, schools, recreation, crime, and costs. To find houses in your price range in your preferred communities, use the internet. Based on the findings, prioritize your wants and requirements, and then add or remove properties from the inventory you’d want to see. Also, do some research on what you can do after the move. Find gyms, theatres, and similar things you usually visit in your free time. By doing research, finding your dream home in Miami will be much quicker.

A person drinking coffee while looking at their laptop

Prepare yourself financially

Lenders often suggest you can afford a house that’s two to three times your annual gross income, depending on your situation. Make a budget so you know how much you can afford to spend each month.

Then, gather all of your financial documents and go through your options with a lender to receive an official letter outlining your borrowing capacity. The lender will not necessarily consider the additional costs you’ll have to pay when you buy or your intentions to start a family or buy a new car, so browse in a price range you’re comfortable with. Presenting a bid that is conditional on financing will make it less appealing to sellers.

Plan your move and create a timeline

Are there flaws on your credit report that will take time to clear up? Have you already sold your existing house? If not, you’ll have to account for the time it takes to sell your home. If you’re a renter, when’s the last day of your lease? Do you believe that interest rates will rise soon? Buying, closing, and relocating will all take longer if you have to deal with any of these issues.

You can employ expert movers to help you with your long-distance move and load and unload your things, as well as transport them to your new home if you opt for a full-service move. With professional help, you will organize an easy relocation to this exciting city. Moreover, many full-service movers can assist you with packing, disassembling, and reassembling your furniture—as well as setting up your multimedia and electrical equipment if you’re prepared to pay extra. Some will even ship your automobile for you.

Make long-term plans

Your long-term goals may determine the sort of house you buy. Are you looking for a starter house to live in for a couple of years or a home you want to stay in for ten years? If you’re thinking about starting a family, make sure your priority list helps you find a house you’ll still enjoy in a few years.

Hire a realtor

Find a real estate expert you can trust by asking those you can rely on for recommendations. You should speak with agents to determine whether they are knowledgeable about the areas you are interested in and the types of properties available. Because purchasing a house is such an emotional experience, you should think about whether your personality and the realtor you’re considering are a good fit. Realtors can also help you decide on different neighborhoods. Also, find out if the agent has experience in buyer representation. Unlike listing agents, who have a duty to the seller first and foremost, buyers’ agents work only for the buyer, even though the seller generally compensates them. Last but not least, see if the agents are certified realtors, which implies they are members of the National Association of Realtors. For more than a century, the NAR has fought for the rights of homebuyers.

Stay realistic

Being picky about where you want to live is OK, but don’t be unrealistic or blinded by minor flaws in the area or house you’re considering. Cul-de-sac dwellers may lose out on beautiful properties on equally quiet and isolated streets if they insist on staying there.

On the other hand, don’t let a “wow” feature blind you to other important considerations, such as noise levels, which can have a significant influence on your well-being. When evaluating each property, keep in mind your priority list and that there is no such thing as the perfect house.

Limit your options

When faced with a significant financial choice, it is only natural to look for support. With that said, you’ve probably heard the expression “too many cooks spoil the broth”. Choose one or two persons to get a second opinion from. However, stick to your list of desires and requirements. That way, your final selection will be based on the things that are most important to you.

In conclusion

There are many things to consider when finding your dream home in Miami. After reading this article, you will be fully prepared for your hunt. It is not an easy process, but it will be worth it once it is over!

Things you miss the most when you leave Miami

One cannot understand just how unique the good old 3-0-5 is until they’ve lived there. The mix of cultures, food (ah, the food!), weather, beach, and don’t even get me started on the coffee! Sure, there are plenty of things to complain about as well, but the benefits of life in Miami definitely outweigh the cons. While many of us would love nothing but to call this easy-going city home for years to come,

While many of us would love nothing but to call this easy-going city home for years to come, sometimes, certain circumstances lead to us moving further away. Saying goodbye is incredibly hard, especially when you think about everything you’ll be leaving behind. When you actually relocate, and do so on budget, you can’t help but feel nostalgic. And out of all the things you miss, the following are the things you miss the most when you leave Miami.

What are the things you miss the most when you leave Miami?

You’ve decided to start anew somewhere else and are undoubtedly feeling excited about the long-distance move you will experience. As far a relocation to a different city is concerned, you’ve got it all covered. You’ve gone through the planning, booked movers, and prepared for the physical aspects of the move. But what about the mental ones? Have you stopped to think about everything you’ll miss about Miami? Because let me tell you, the list of things you will miss is anything but short!

The weather

It’s impossible to talk about the Magic City without mentioning the weather, which, let’s face it, is darn near perfect! And it isn’t like it only during the summer season, but, in fact, all year long! Blue skies and an abundance of sunshine are something you’ll crave, even more so if you are swapping this sunny paradise for its exact opposite.

The locals

You have yet to meet locals friendlier than those from Miami! Perhaps, it’s that South American influence, but Miamians are far from your typical American. The city and its people share that easy-going attitude. They are always up for socializing, love fooling around, and are incredibly helpful. It’s hard to explain, but if you’ve ever spent a minute in the area, you know exactly what I am talking about.

The fashion

You’ll see all kinds of fashion choices on the streets of Miami. The good thing about this place is that nobody judges anyone. You are free to dress however you feel like it without anybody giving you a second glance. Wear sandals and socks, high heels any time of day, or dress as a cartoon character if you will. Either way, no one will care!

The food

Simply speaking, food in Miami is otherworldly! It’s that Cuban and Colombian cuisine that’s among the toughest to let go of. Think pastelitos, sandwiches, croquetas, frijoles, and so much more! I sure hope food in your new city will be able to match that of 3-0-5. But, honestly, how big is the chance that it will?

The coffee

No other coffee can compare to that Miami has to offer! In fact, the city even has its own official coffee break time, which is, surprise, surprise, at 3:05 (get it? 305 is the area code for Miami). Cafecito, or Cuban coffee, is especially popular among locals, with Cafe con Leche not falling short behind.

A person pouring milk into coffee, one of the things you miss the most when you leave Miami
When you think about all the wonderful times you had at the beach, it’s tough not to feel nostalgic.

Street vendors

Forgot to buy some fruit at the supermarket? No worries, you can get your dose of fresh goodies right on the street from the vendors that pass by all the time. No more of that, huh?

The traffic

Although frequently infuriating (traffic jams, I am talking about you!), the city’s traffic is still among the things you miss the most when you leave Miami. After all, think about all those opportunities to fix your makeup or check your emails the lengthy transit gave you!

The local language

English and Spanish are both spoken among locals, which have actually caused the formation of something like a ”new” language. We could call it Spanglish, as, in essence, it is a mix of these two languages. This is a thing unique to the Magic City, and many outsiders have a tough time understanding the slang.

A person writing on the blackboard in both Englihs and Spanish
It’s hard not to miss Spanglish – the combination of English and Spanish unique to the city of Miami.

The hurricane season

Now you may be thinking, ”how in the world could I miss something so awful and life-threatening as hurricane season?” but bear with me for a second. Of course, there is nothing to feel nostalgic about the horrible wind causing mass destruction. It’s actually those bonding moments you’ll notice the absence of. The moments you and your neighbors all gather ’round in preparation for the coming hurricane. This is when real entertainment happens, being a way to get your mind off the obviously present fear.

The beach

The beach is a huge part of life here, with the most prominent one beingSouth Beach. And what’s not to love about it? The long walks on it, the feeling of sand between the toes, the serenity the sound of waves induces. Good times.

Sunglasses on the sand

When you think about all the wonderful times you had at the beach, it’s tough not to feel nostalgic.

Dancing

Miamians really got the moves! It’s those Hispanic genes again that make them excellent dancers! When we compare outsiders with the residents of 3-0-5, the first do nothing but give off a vibe of a bunch of drunks while dancing.

Bodeguitas

There are bodegas, convenience stores, supermarkets, and then there are bodeguitas. They are a combination of various places, considering you can do so much more than just buy something in them. Bodeguitas sell things, offer customers a chance to pay their bills, cash their checks, make key duplicates, and more.

In retrospect, wherever you go, the Magic City will forever be in your mind, your heart, and your soul. Sure, you can’t help but think about the things you miss the most when you leave Miami, but then again, there’s always a possibility of coming back to the city to experience them all over again.Spending a holiday in 3-0-5 is, for example, a good idea and, while you wait to do so, you can always cherish the memories you already made in this glorious place.

A blend of different cultures, it has been a place where people come to chase their dreams for quite some time now. Stay tuned for some helpful info.

Bungalows

Bungalows are somewhat of a Miami trademark, and you’ll find them mainly in Little Havana. The style reached its peak during the 1930s, and you can say it has grown more beautiful with time. That’s probably because folks like to see the passage of time materialized in buildings. Yeah, sorry for the bad poetry. Anyway, we’re sure some history enthusiasts will enjoy bungalows. They’re also very affordable, which makes them a popular choice among newcomers.

Art Deco style

There probably isn’t a style more associated with the 20s and 30s of the 20th century than Art Deco. Everyone recognizes it, even if they don’t know its name. If you’ve watched some Old Hollywood movies, you’ll recognize it at first sight. Art Deco-style homes in Miami are just a wonderful sight to see. History buffs will also enjoy them. They’re little time machines for all we care. Although Art Deco buildings are mostly non-residential, you can easily find some that are available for tenants. If you’re not that familiar with the style, make sure you check Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District. You’ll fall in love with it right away – we guarantee it! Now this one’s for folks with bigger pockets. You’ll find luxury high-rise condos all over the place. If you can afford this – you really don’t need to worry about a thing. You probably have everything you need inside your building: a gym, a yoga studio, and everything else your body and soul desire. These condos are mostly situated in the Coconut Grove, Design District, and Brickell areas. Some say Brickell is one of the most popular places for singles in Miami. Mission-style houses

These are probably the most iconic types of homes in Miami. Mission-style houses are something that’s a part of our collective unconscious. You know you’ve seen it somewhere, but you just can’t remember where. The style borrows a lot from the Spanish Mission churches – arches, smooth stucco exteriors, and tiled roofs. You’ll find them somewhere around Coconut Grove. Search Google images to see what we’re talking about; you won’t regret it. Just by looking at the pictures, you can feel the overall atmosphere of living inside a Mission-style house.

Conch houses

The award for the oldest style on this list goes to Conch houses, built somewhere around the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. With their pretty distinctive exteriors, they’re very easy to spot. Here’s a fun fact: the style first appeared in Key West from where it spread to the other Keys and Miami.

Driving in Miami: 7 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Driving in Miami is easier than its reputation suggests, once you know the handful of things that work differently here. The tolls take no cash, the fast lanes on I-95 cost money, the phone rules are strict in places, and a summer storm can turn a clear road into a slow one in minutes.

These seven facts cover what catches visitors and new residents most often. The laws below were checked against Florida statutes and the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) in October 2026.

1. The toll roads do not take cash

There are no toll booths on Miami-area expressways. An overhead gantry reads a transponder on the windshield or photographs the license plate, and the bill follows later.

You will meet this within minutes of leaving the airport, because the Dolphin Expressway (SR 836) and the Airport Expressway (SR 112) are both tolled. Florida’s Turnpike and the Rickenbacker and Venetian causeways are too. The MacArthur and Julia Tuttle causeways to Miami Beach are free.

In a rental car, the rental company bills you for the toll plus its own service fee. Those fees vary a lot, so read our guide to rental car tolls in Miami before you reach the counter. If you would rather skip tolls altogether, turn on “avoid tolls” in your navigation app.

2. The express lanes on I-95 are tolled

The regular lanes on I-95 are free. The express lanes in the middle are not, and their price rises and falls with traffic.

Two things to know:

  • Enter and leave the express lanes only at the marked openings. Cutting across the plastic poles that separate them from the regular lanes is illegal and causes crashes.
  • The express lanes skip some exits. Check that yours is reachable before you move over.

3. Rush hour lasts longer than you expect

Weekday traffic is heaviest from roughly 7 to 10 a.m. and from 4 to 7 p.m. I-95, the Dolphin Expressway, the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the causeways to Miami Beach all back up, and one crash can add half an hour.

Leave extra time for anything with a fixed start, such as a flight, a cruise or a dinner reservation. Check FL511, the state’s traffic service, or your navigation app before you set off. Event nights downtown and weekend afternoons on the beach causeways can be as slow as a weekday rush.

4. Speed limits, and the “super speeder” law

Florida’s default limits are 30 mph in business and residential districts and 55 mph on other roads unless a sign says otherwise. Interstates are posted higher, up to 70 mph outside the city. School zones drop to 15 or 20 mph when the lights are flashing.

Since July 1, 2025, extreme speeding has been a criminal offense in Florida, not just a ticket. Driving 50 mph or more over the limit, or at 100 mph or more in a way that endangers others, can bring up to 30 days in jail, a $500 fine, or both on a first conviction. Penalties rise for a second.

Miami traffic often moves faster than the signs. Match the flow where it is safe, keep right if you are going slower, and let the people in a hurry go.

5. Phone rules are stricter than many visitors assume

Florida law on phones has two parts:

  • Texting while driving is illegal everywhere. That covers typing or reading texts, emails and messages while the car is moving. Police can stop you for it.
  • In school zones, school crossings and active work zones, you cannot hold a phone at all. A violation there is a moving violation with three points on your license.

Using your phone for navigation is allowed, and so are hands-free calls. Mount the phone and set the route before you pull out.

6. Move over for stopped vehicles

Florida’s Move Over law requires you to change lanes away from a stopped emergency, tow, utility or sanitation vehicle. It also covers any disabled car on the shoulder with its hazard lights on.

If you cannot move over safely, slow down to 20 mph below the posted limit. Where the limit is 20 mph or less, slow to 5 mph. It is a common ticket on I-95 and the Turnpike. FLHSMV explains the rule on its Move Over page.

7. Rain changes everything, fast

From about June through October, short and heavy afternoon storms are routine. Visibility can drop to a few car lengths, and low streets in Miami Beach and Brickell flood quickly.

  • Turn your headlights on in rain. Florida law requires it.
  • Slow down and leave more room. Roads are slickest in the first minutes of a storm.
  • Do not drive through standing water you cannot judge. It stalls cars, and salt water from tidal flooding damages them. Damage from driving through water may not be covered by a rental company’s damage waiver.

Storms pass quickly. Waiting 20 minutes in a parking lot is often the smartest move.

Quick answers for visitors

Can I drive in Florida with a foreign license?

Yes. Visitors can drive with a valid license from their home state or country. FLHSMV covers the details in its Visiting Florida FAQ. Rental companies set their own document rules, so check with yours.

Can I turn right on a red light?

Yes, after a complete stop and when the way is clear, unless a sign at the intersection says no turn on red.

Do I need a car in Miami at all?

Not always. Downtown, Brickell and South Beach are well covered by the free Metromover and trolleys. See our guide to public transportation in Miami. A car makes sense for the Everglades, the Keys and the suburbs.

Where do I pick up a rental at the airport?

At the MIA Rental Car Center, a free train ride from the terminal. Our guide to renting a car in Miami covers what to bring.

Is parking hard in Miami Beach?

It is tight and enforced closely, but manageable if you use the city garages. The Miami Beach parking guide lists rates and how to avoid a tow.

I just moved here. Do I need a Florida license?

New residents have 30 days to get a Florida license. If you need to take the knowledge exam, a practice site such as DMV Written Test is a quick way to review the handbook.

The bottom line

Plan for tolls before you leave the rental lot, stay out of the express lanes unless you mean to use them, put the phone in a mount, and give yourself extra time at rush hour and in the rain. Do that and driving in Miami is no harder than in any other large American city.

Laws and limits were checked against Florida statutes and FLHSMV in October 2026. Rules change, so confirm anything that affects your trip.
