Top 5 Activities in Miami for People in Recovery

For many years, Miami has been a place where people come to recover from various addictions. If that is your reason for coming to Miami, be sure that you are not alone. Moreover, be sure that, while you are here, you can do many sober-friendly activities that will take your mind off your problems. Once you start your first stages of sobriety, it may be challenging to focus on anything but that. However, you will want to get back to things that bring you joy as time goes by. You can find those things right here in Miami too! Today, we will share the top 5 activities in Miami for people in recovery. Give some of them a try when you are between your meetings and treatments.

1. Hang Out at the Beach

One can’t come to Miami and not visit its mesmerizing beaches. Since the weather in this part of Florida is always warm and sunny, you can enjoy the beach and beach activities all year round. And, when it comes to beach activities in Miami for people in recovery, we suggest them all. You can do water sports, relax on the beach and sunbathe, swim, surf, snorkel, and do pretty much everything you always loved doing at the beach. Moreover, many book clubs, conversation clubs, and even meeting clubs take place on the beach, so if you are into these, feel free to join them.

And, although there are many fantastic beaches in Miami, we suggest going to some of the top-rated ones. For instance, those are:

  • Lumus Park Beach
  • Bal Harbor Beach
  • South Beach
  • Crandon Park Beach
  • Surfside Beach

Some people in recovery often have visits from their family members too. If your family also decided to come and visit you, beaches are always a fun activity in Miami to do with your kids and all other family members.

2. Visit the Everglades

Just a couple of miles south, a whole different world is just waiting to be explored. Its name is Everglades, and it is something wildly different from the rest of Miami. Everglades National Park is a swampland full of gators. You can watch them in their national habitat or even interact with them (together with a professional, of course). Besides that, here is where you can go on airboat rides, try local oranges from orange orchards, check out sugar cane fields, etc.

Many people believe that the best thing for recovering is getting back to routine. They also think that doing new things can be stressful for people in recovery. But, according to Bright Futures Treatment Center experts, that is not necessarily the case. Some ‘patients’ thrive when being exposed to new things – this makes them feel happy, satisfied, and most importantly, alive. So, if you are currently in the midst of your treatment or recovering from it, don’t be afraid to try new things – things such as those found in the Everglades.

3. Go Hiking

If you want to make a recovery your top priority, you must find a hobby. That hobby should be healthy, fun, and something that will motivate you to finish your recovery journey. And, it should be something that will help you on those difficult days when you need a distraction. Many people believe that that can be going on a hike. That is why we had to mention it on our list of top activities in Miami for people in recovery.

There are many hiking trails in Miami. You can go on some of those specialized trails with an organized group or go on a solo hike somewhere else. For instance, you can hike along the beach, in one of many parks and forests, and even in sugar fields. If you have a dog, bring them along – hiking is a fun activity to do with your dog in Miami

4. Participate in an Art Class

If you don’t like outdoor activities such as hiking, going to the beach, or meeting alligators, don’t force yourself to do them. Many other indoor hobbies can also bring you joy. For instance, those can be activities such as painting, seed beading, digital art, knitting, jewelry making, creative writing, crocheting, etc. You can take art classes for all of these, or you can do them in the comfort of your home. And, remember, art therapy is a great way to express yourself and a fantastic way to heal! Miami is full of art centers of this kind. Some have brick-and-mortar headquarters where you can take a course, and some offer online classes. Moreover, don’t be forced to start creating art instantly. Before you begin, you can first go to art galleries, museums, and all sorts of artistic centers – all of which are excellent activities in Miami for people in recovery.

5. Learn Yoga

People in Miami are all into sports and healthy living – that is maybe one of the reasons why there are so many young people moving to Miami. You don’t have to be one of those people if you don’t want to, but at least try to incorporate some healthy habits into your life. For instance – do yoga. Yoga has already proved beneficial in the recovery of many illnesses and addictions because it works on healing both body and soul. So, even if you aren’t interested in it, give it a go. You need a couple of weeks to get used to it, and once you do, you will want to practice it for the rest of your life.

There are many places to do yoga in Miami – parks, beaches, sports centers, gyms, or even at home. Moreover, you can practice it as a part of a team (guided by a certified yoga instructor) or alone (guided by a YouTube video). Try it both ways and see what works for you better. You will soon see why yoga is one of the best activities in Miami for people in recovery.
