If you are planning a major move then you had better consider the possibility of engaging a professional company for moving your personal effects. Moving from one town to another could mean a huge headache for most people but these days you can hire professionals to handle the job for you.

Choosing the right people

Moving can fast turn into a nightmare if you do not choose your moving company wisely. Be prepared to ask around and do a little research. Always ensure that you get licensed movers to do the moving for you. These licensed movers are well insured and that can save you a lot of money and time. You are also likely to get a better bargain in the winter then in the summer months. Moving during the holiday season can prove to be very costly. Beware of people who are willing to do the moving at a very low cost. These are probably fraudulent people and you are best advised to stay away from them.

Paying an advance for moving

Most companies will ask you for an advance to cover some of the cost of moving and to ensure that they cover their expenses if the deal falls flat. However, you should ensure that the amount of the advance is reasonable. Above all, make sure that you ask for a receipt on your advance. Things can get messy afterwards without a receipt. You must also ensure that your advance deposit is refundable if you decide to cancel your plans to move elsewhere.

Get someone to visit your home personally

We love to do things on the phone. While that may be easy in some instances, it is not a good idea when asking for a quote from a moving company. A personal on-the-spot assessment can save you a lot of trouble and money later on. Let an official of the company see what needs to be moved and how it needs to be done. This will give you an accurate estimate. Some companies charge extra later on for packing and handling certain types of goods and furniture. You should not allow this to happen to you. Point out every item that has to be packed and moved. You should make sure that you get an exact estimate and not a rough estimate of the expenses. Rough estimates have a tendency to increase substantially at a later date. You will be saddled with a much fatter bill than you previously estimated. You should ask for a written and signed agreement that should be binding on both parties.

Watch out for pilferers

Often people who have moved find that something is missing. You need to protect your valuables. Trusting people with your priceless possessions could prove to be costly. If you have expensive stuff in your home, you are better advised to take them with you and not leave them to the moving company personnel. Valuables have a nasty habit of disappearing in transit.

Personally supervise the packing

It is always a smart idea to supervise the packing of your stuff to prevent damage. After all, it is your stuff. The people doing the packing just want to finish the job and may not really care. Each item has to be carefully packed and labeled. Company employees may break things and you may never even find out if you do not supervise the packing.
